Scholarship Program
Futuro del Oro provides scholarship assistance for local students at the Jr. High (Secundaria), High School (Preparatoria) and University levels. For the 2004-2005 school year, we supported 52 students (16 Secondaria, 23 Preparatoria and 13 University).
Sponsorship comes in many forms. You may sponsor an individual student on a yearly basis or for all of the years a young person stays in school. You may share the sponsoring of a student with another person. You may also donate to the program in general on a monthly or yearly basis.
Annual schooling costs are as follows:
Secundaria (7th - 9th Grade)
One sponsorship provides yearly registration and books for a jr. high school-aged child.
Cost to sponsor a junior high school student: $175
Preparatoria (10th - 12th Grade)
One sponsorship provides registration and books twice a year for a high school-aged student. In addition, it provides $20 per month for the 10-month school year. There are occasional expenses for projects, field trips and summer school.
Cost to sponsor a high school student: $800
Universidad (College or University)
One sponsorship provides registration and books twice a year for a student attending college or university. (There is an additional registration fee for summer school.) In addition, it provides $30 per month for 10 months (or 12 months if they attend summer school).
University students face extra challenging circumstances. The cost of books is very high. Special projects or learning sessions may take students places such as Scripps Institute in La Jolla, CA. Schools are often located miles apart, so transportation and food are constant expenses. Many students must work part-time to help support their families and to offset the expense of schooling.
Cost to sponsor a university student: $1,000 to $1,500 per year

Celebrating Success
In Mexico, graduation is a true achievement and is cause for serious celebration. A ball is held with music and formal dress. High school and college class rings are a real treasure. Such recognition can be a burden on local families and Futuro del Oro takes great pride in helping students celebrate the completion of their school years.
